Wij zijn twee studenten Game Design & Development aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. In ons derde jaar gaan we een half jaar in Japan studeren. Van april tot en met augustus studeren we Manga (comic art) aan de Kyoto Seika University. Op deze blog vertellen we onze belevenissen!
Hoe hebben we deze uitwisseling geregeld? Makkelijk was het niet!!
In augustus 2006, vlak voordat ons tweede jaar op de HKU begon, zochten we voor de lol op internet allemaal scholen in Japan op. We wilden kijken of daar ook opleidingen waren die leken op onze opleiding Game Design, en of je daar heen zou kunnen. De eerste school die we vonden was Kyoto Seika University. Het leek een heel coole school, een enorme kunstacademie met allerlei opleidingen, van traditioneel Japans schilderen tot Video and Media Arts. De grootste trekpleister was echter de faculteit die volledig was gewijd aan manga (striptekenen op zijn Japans), en waar je allerlei tekenlessen kon volgen. Helemaal geweldig dus :).
Tot onze grote verbazing, zagen we toen we de lijst met uitwisselings-banden bekeken, dat de HKU daar tussen stond! We hadden daarvoor geen idee dat de HKU contact had met Japanse scholen, maar hebben gelijk een afpsraak gemaakt met het Internationaal Bureau op de HKU. In september 2006 hadden we ons eerste gesprek.
Tijdens dat gesprek kwamen we er achter dat de banden die de HKU met deze school in Japan had, pas net opgezet waren. De eerste uitwisselingsstudent moest er nog heen. Wij stonden op de lijst als tweede en derde. Tot dan toe leek alles aardig goed te gaan omdat we er zo vroeg bij waren, maar het zou nog duren tot januari 2008 voor het allemaal geregeld was.
Aanvankelijk nam Kyoto Seika maar een uitwisselingsstudent aan per jaar. Natuurlijk wilden wij allebei gaan, en daarom stuurden we aanbevelingsbrieven en portfolios naar Japan in de hoop hun te overtuigen twee studenten aan te nemen. Maar in Japan zijn de regels erg streng, en dus werd dit voorstel afgewezen. Omdat we allebei naar het buitenland wilden, gingen we daarom andere scholen in Azie opzoeken. We hebben scholen in China en Korea gezien die erg leuk leken, maar omdat we zo lang bezig waren geweest met Japan, was de deadline voor deze scholen inmiddels verstreken. Het leek er op dat er maar een van ons naar Azie zou gaan…
Inmiddels was het maart 2007. We gekregen bericht van ons Internationaal Bureau dat de HKU contacten had gelegd met een tweede school in Japan. Als alles goed zou komen, zou misschien een van ons naar die school kunnen in Tokyo, terwijl de ander dan naar Kyoto zou gaan. Het nadeel van de school in Tokyo was dat het niet alleen een stuk duurder was qua woon- en leefkosten, maar ook dat er nog erg veel geregeld moesten worden tussen hun en de HKU en dat dat nog tenminste een jaar zou duren. Desalniettemin wilden deze optie proberen.
Het zat ons opeens mee toen we in de zomer van 2007 te horen kregen dat Kyoto Seika University, nadat er een grote internationale vergadering over uitwisselingen was geweest, twee studenten per jaar zou gaan aannemen. YATTA! Dat betekende dat we allebei ons konden gaan aanmelden! De enige voorwaarde was dat we allebei naar een andere faculteit moesten, omdat het anders te druk zou worden. Met name de Manga-faculteit was in grote trek, dus daar zouden we niet allebei kunnen studeren.
In oktober hebben we onze aanmeldingen en portfolio’s opgestuurd, Ward voor de opleiding Oil Painting, en Marthe voor Manga.
En toen moesten we wachten. En wachten. En nog meer wachten. In december kregen we eindelijk een bericht uit Kyoto. Oil Painting had Ward geadviseerd voor zijn tweede keus te gaan, Video and Media Arts. Die opleiding zat alleen al bijna vol. We wisten nu niet of dat betekende dat Ward niet was toegelaten, en dus wachtten we vol spanning af op nieuw bericht.
Eind december hoorden we dat Ward misschien ook wel terecht kon bij Manga, omdat er eigenlijk maar weinig aanmeldingen waren voor dat semester. Dit moest eerst nog besloten worden in een speciale vergadering op Kyoto Seika, dus het was nog niet zeker. We moesten afwachten.
Toen werd het Kerst. En dat betekende dat zowel de afdeling op de HKU als die in Seika voor drie weken lang gesloten zou zijn en we dus geen uitsluitsel zouden krijgen. Je kan je misschien wel voorstellen hoe frustrerend dat was :P! Inmiddels waren we al druk bezig met het leren van Japans, je weet maar nooit. Wekenlang leerder we de taal terwijl we wachtten op verlossend bericht uit Kyoto.
18 januari 2008 was het eindelijk zover. We kregen bericht dat we allebei waren toegelaten op de Manga faculteit van Kyoto Seika University.
Na anderhalf jaar van stress, regelen en plannen was het ons eindelijk gelukt. In maart 2008 zouden we samen naar Japan gaan om daar een half jaar te kunnen studeren!
